The Washington Post reports today (wpo.st/SXtv0 ) about legislation to be proposed in Maryland in early 2016 to require that 25% of the state’s energy be provided by renewable resources by 2020. This is a significant improvement upon the existing requirement that 20% of energy consumed in the state be from renewable resources by 2022. According to the bill’s sponsors, meeting the new target will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2.7 million metric tons per year, which is equivalent to removing 563,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road.

The legislation is being sponsored by State Senate Majority Leader Catherine E. Pugh (D-Baltimore), Del. Dereck E. Davis (D-Prince George’s), Sen. Brian J. Feldman (D-Montgomery), and Del. C. William Frick (D-Montgomery).
